Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an ailment in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, particularly in the wrist. In most cases both wrists are affected. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage cushioning the ends of bones weakens over time. Usually, this type of arthritis attacks people who have a previous wrist injury.

Gout

Gout materializes from too much uric acid buildup in joints, with swelling and pain as a result. It can strike the wrists, ankles, and knees.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

This disorder develops from too much pressure exerted on the median nerves which pass to the wrist through the carpal tunnel.

Wrist Injury Symptoms

• Swollen fingers
• Hand numbness
• Difficulty gripping objects
• Pain and numbness that worsens at night
• Sudden piercing pain in the hand

If you experience irritation or swelling in your joints, seek medical attention. Your recovery depends upon early diagnosis and treatment.

Diagnosis and Treatment

A doctor will examine the painful areas and ascertain the cause. Some tests include:

• Bending the wrist to see if numbness develops
• Holding objects and assessing your grip
• Testing blood and urine for various medical conditions
• Taking X-rays

Treatment depends on the cause of the pain and the extent of any damage. Some mild conditions causing wrist pain can be addressed by:

• Wearing a bracelet to reduce swelling
• Applying a hot or cold compress
• Taking pain relievers
• Cutting intake of alcohol and foods rich in fat
• Resting your wrist in an elevated manner

For conditions such as arthritis, seek the assistance of an experienced physical therapist. Severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome could require surgery to repair the damage.
