Common knee problems

• Misshapen or deformed joints
• Inability to bear weight or stand on the affected leg
• Inability to bend or straighten the knee
• Tingling numbness, swelling or discoloration below the knee
• Infection
• Severe pain that continues even after treatment

Arthritis

Arthritis is the top cause of constant, debilitating knee pain. It is a degenerative condition that can eventually require surgery. Arthritis of the knee comes in different forms.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects many joints including the knee. It causes pain and damage to tissues in the knee. The knee becomes warm to the touch and swollen.
Osteoarthritis wears out the smooth, protective layers of knee cartilage progressively. This damages the bones in the knee. It causes limited range of motion, stiffness, swelling, deformity and eventually weakness in the knee.
Post-traumatic arthritis affects the knee years after a serious injury (such as damaged ligament or fractured bone). It causes severe pain, stiffness and swelling in the knee.

Fractures

Fractures to the knee are created by moderate- or high-impact injury resulting from something like a car accident or contact sports. Traumatic injuries can result in broken bones. A fracture is extremely painful and tender. The pain becomes more severe when you try to walk or put weight on the knee. Fractures are medical emergencies that should receive medical care as soon as possible.

Sprained or torn ligaments

Sprained ligaments may be partially ruptured while torn ligaments are completely ruptured. A sprain or tear in the knee often produces a ripping or tearing sensation along the inner joint of the knee. Such injuries are common in contact sports or when the knee is twisted while enjoying activities such as dancing, skiing or basketball. They occur at the point of impact, causing knee instability and eventual swelling.
